Beach Glass Writers Residency offers an artistic, distraction-free space where writers can unwind, be inspired, and make real writing progress.
This self-directed residency provides an immersive creative environment with 1:1 support from a seasoned writing coach and developmental editor.
Urban + Beach Lodging in Chicago’s Most Diverse Neighborhood
We are located in Chicago’s vibrant, artistic Rogers Park neighborhood, which, according to a 2022 list from Money.com, is the fifth best place to live in all of America! Our beautifully renovated four-bedroom duplex is just a stone’s throw from Lake Michigan, where you’ll find inspiration in the retro architecture of the old Sherwin Hotel and the calming rhythm of the waves.
Close to both Loyola and Northwestern universities, you’ll be surrounded by academic vigor and creative energy, with easy access to Chicago’s world-class attractions.
Choose one of three single-occupancy rooms, with amenities that include a private or semi-private bathroom, workspaces, a fully-equipped kitchen, shared living/dining area, and more.

Whether you prefer the privacy of your room, the beach’s natural splendor, or the ambiance of a local café, your writing sanctuary awaits. We offer five 6-night residencies each year, June through October.

Just steps from the sandy shores of Lake Michigan, Beach Glass Writers Residency is an idyllic haven for writers who want quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of life to focus on their writing. The guest rooms are roomy and welcoming, complete with desks and bright windows. There’s always hot coffee, tea, and confections for breakfast as well as a large, light-filled sitting area where you can write, read, and let your imagination bloom. Chicago is moments away, so writers can enjoy fabulous restaurants and the city’s glittering nightlife. Author Tammy Letherer is not only a splendid host but also a wise and gifted writing teacher. Private coaching sessions with her are available, but not required. I immensely enjoyed my time away at Beach Glass Writers Residency, and I highly recommend it!!

Applying for a Beach Glass Writers Residency is simple. Follow the link to submit a statement of your goals for the residency and your preferred dates. We encourage writers of all genres and backgrounds to apply. Spaces are limited to ensure an intimate, focused experience.

The 2025 Residency Price is $995
The cost of a 6-night stay includes:
- Lodging for 6 nights
- Bedding and towels
- Beach towel and chair
- Unlimited coffee/tea and daily continental breakfast items
- Two 1:1 editorial review sessions with Tammy
- A family-style dinner
- A variety of impromptu outings to choose from! Past participants have enjoyed beach yoga, swing dancing, vintage shopping in Evanston, or a trip to nearby Ba’hai Temple.
A Professional Guide on Your Writing Journey
Tammy is not just a fellow writer; she is an award-winning author, writing coach, and developmental editor for Atmosphere Press. With a journalism degree from Indiana University and a diverse writing career, she brings a wealth of experience to guide you in your writing pursuits, wherever you are in your journey.
Tammy’s latest book, a memoir entitled The Buddha at My Table, was honored as the 2019 Book of the Year by the Chicago Writers Association. She is also the author of two novels. Her passion is helping writers become authors, and she has helped numerous individuals complete both fiction and nonfiction manuscripts and navigate the intricate path of publishing.

What is Beach Glass?
Beach glass is created in the waters of the Great Lakes from glass that has been discarded, broken into pieces, then smoothed by tumbling waves.
Each piece is a unique combination of nature and mankind working together, over time, to create something unique and special.
